Your headshot is often the first impression people have of you, on LinkedIn, your company website, a speaker bio or a real-estate listing. A little preparation goes a long way. Here is how to get a headshot you will be proud to share.

Know where your headshot will be used

A corporate website, an acting portfolio and a personal brand on Instagram all call for slightly different looks. Tell your photographer how you plan to use the images so the lighting, background and expression match your goals.

What to wear for a professional headshot

• Solid colors work best. Navy, charcoal, soft blues, burgundy and earth tones flatter most skin tones.
• Avoid busy patterns and logos, which pull attention from your face.
• Bring options. One formal outfit and one more relaxed outfit gives you flexibility.
• Make sure it fits. Iron or steam your clothes the day before.

Grooming tips

Get a haircut about a week before, not the day before. Keep makeup natural and matte to avoid shine under studio lights. Bring a comb, lip balm and blotting papers. Glasses are fine; we will adjust lighting to minimize glare.

What happens during the session

A MOONO headshot session takes about 45 minutes in our Houston studio. We start with a quick chat about your goals, then adjust lighting and posing as we go. You will see images on the screen during the shoot, so we can fine-tune your expression together. Most people relax after the first few minutes.

Tips for a natural expression

1. Push your forehead slightly toward the camera and lower your chin a touch.
2. Think of someone you love, or something that makes you laugh.
3. Breathe out before each shot to relax your shoulders.
